So I find this law at work: Although I want to do good, evil is right there with me. For in my inner being I delight in God’s law; but I see another law at work in me, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within me. What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death?

Every January, many of us make resolutions about changes we want to make and the kind of person we want to be in the coming year. And often, by February 1, we have broken those resolutions and given up on those changes. I do not say this to make you feel badly – I am guilty of this myself. But it shows how difficult it is to become a better person on our own. We want to, but we just can’t.
The next verse of the Scripture from Romans answers the question it ends with: “Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord!” This may not help us lose weight, but it sure takes a weight off our shoulders.
